The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) provides accreditation for veterinary hospitals throughout the United States and Canada.
Founded in 1933, it is the only organization that accredits American animal hospitals.
While accreditation is mandatory for hospitals that provide care for humans, the process is strictly voluntary for animal hospitals. As a result, only about 12% of facilities in the United States are accredited.
To earn accreditation, animal hospitals must be evaluated on more than 900 standards that encompass everything from customer service and patient care to cleanliness, operating procedures, and much, much more. Once a facility is accredited, they must be re-evaluated every three years in order to maintain their accreditation.
