5 Care Tips to Support Your Deaf Dog

Deafness is a challenge many pet parents will have to face with their dogs. Some puppies are born deaf, known as congenital deafness, while other dogs can lose their hearing over their lifetime. These pups require extra care and attention from their owners to help ensure they live a happy and content life with or without hearing. Below you will find 5 care tips to support your deaf dog:

  • Use a Night Light: Your deaf pup won’t be their sharpest in the dark, carry a night light to help them be aware of where you are. This can help reduce the anxiety that may come from a pup that has a difficult time navigating their environment due to impaired senses.

  •  Use Hand Signals: Make the most of your dog’s sight by communicating with hand signals. Dog’s usually learn quickly what you are trying to communicate with them with these non-verbal cues.

  • Avoid Frightening: Your deaf pup can’t hear you coming, so it’s best to stay within their field of vision when you approach. You can put their hand in front of their nose, or gently touch them as a way to not disturb or frighten your deaf pup while they are napping.
